Starting and running a business is a dream for many. It brings freedom, financial independence, and the satisfaction of building something from the ground up. But for many business owners, scaling the business becomes a daunting challenge.
As someone who has closely observed the struggles of business owners, I understand that many of them find it easy to start a business but challenging to sustain and grow it. In my experience, there are countless entrepreneurs who, despite working tirelessly, remain stuck at a certain level, unable to break free from their current limitations.
For example, many business owners I’ve met have been running their businesses for 5, 10, or even 15 years but still find themselves at a plateau, unable to cross the revenue milestone of ₹1 crore or ₹2 crores. They feel stuck and often lose the passion they once had when they started.
Why does this happen?
The answer lies in the way we approach business growth. Many entrepreneurs spend so much time working in their business that they rarely have the time or resources to work on their business. They get trapped in daily operations, doing the same things repeatedly, and find it hard to think about innovation or growth.
One of the key challenges is the lack of systems and processes. Most businesses depend heavily on the owner, making it hard for them to scale. Think about it: if you have to be present for every decision and every task, how will you focus on growth? To scale a business, you need to step back from routine operations and think like a CEO, not just a business owner.
My Journey from Struggles to Automation
Hello, I’m Dr. Somnath Shingare, and I’ve been in the field of business management for over 18 years. Over the last 5–6 years, I’ve worked on transforming my own business by implementing systems, automating processes, and building a structure that allows me to focus on scaling.
When I started my entrepreneurial journey, I faced the same challenges as many of you. I struggled with managing operations, building a team, and finding time to focus on growth. However, with the guidance of my mentors and years of trial and error, I learned how to create a business that could run on autopilot. Today, I’m proud to say that my business operates smoothly without my constant involvement, and we are growing year after year.
The Importance of Systems and Automation
One of the most significant turning points in my journey was realizing the power of systems. A business without systems is like a machine with missing parts—it can never run efficiently. By documenting every process and creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), I ensured that my team knew exactly what to do, even in my absence.
This approach not only freed up my time but also improved efficiency and reduced errors. With the right systems in place, you can focus on growing your business rather than getting caught up in day-to-day operations.
The Role of Leadership in Scaling a Business
Another key aspect of scaling a business is leadership. As business owners, we often try to do everything ourselves, but this approach limits growth. To scale, you need to delegate responsibilities and empower your team.
Building a strong team is essential for any business. Each team member should clearly understand their role and responsibilities. Weekly review meetings can help ensure that everyone stays aligned with the company’s goals. By trusting your team and giving them the tools they need to succeed, you can focus on the bigger picture.
Consultative Selling: Adding Value to Your Customers
Over my years in sales and marketing, I’ve learned that selling is not just about pushing products. It’s about understanding your customer’s needs and offering solutions that add value to their lives.
This approach, known as consultative selling, builds trust and long-term relationships with customers. By acting as a consultant first and a supplier second, you can differentiate your business from competitors and create loyal customers who keep coming back.
Financial Discipline and Branding
Another crucial aspect of scaling is financial discipline. As a business owner, you need to understand the key financial metrics that drive your business. Maintaining a cash-positive business is essential for sustainability and growth.
In addition, branding plays a vital role in how your business is perceived. A strong brand allows you to create favorable terms and conditions with your customers. For example, my company, Jaggery Tales, operates on a 100% advance payment basis because we’ve built a brand that customers trust.
The Challenges of Scaling
Scaling a business is not without its challenges. It requires a mindset shift and a willingness to embrace change. Many business owners fear losing control when they delegate tasks or implement automation. However, the truth is that letting go of some responsibilities is necessary for growth.
Another common challenge is finding the right people to join your team. Hiring, training, and retaining talent is a continuous process, but it’s an investment that pays off in the long run.
The Rewards of Scaling
Despite the challenges, the rewards of scaling are immense. When your business runs on systems and processes, you gain the freedom to focus on strategy, innovation, and long-term growth. You can spend more time with your family, pursue your passions, and contribute to causes that matter to you.
Scaling also creates opportunities for others. By building a larger business, you can generate employment and contribute to the economy. In my case, franchising my business has not only helped me grow but also provided livelihoods to hundreds of people across India.
